Will.I.am unveils new smartwatch in San Francisco

Will.i.am, the award-winning musician and tech entrepreneur, took the stage at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference on Wednesday in San Francisco to launch Puls, a smartwatch.

The smartwatch is about two inches wide and It doesn't depend on a cellphone like other smartwatches—it connects to a cellular network by itself to make calls, send text messages, check in on social networks, find location on a map, and play music. It has an integrated touch screen and runs on Android OS with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip inside, and delivers about 5 hours of continuous battery life, so you'll need to charge it at least once a day. It also has a voice-activated digital assistant, named Aneeda.

Pricing and launch date for sales haven't been announced yet.

With the smartwatch, Puls, Will.i.am, says he wants to bring the worlds of tech and fashion together.

"We all are moving to encourage kids in inner cities to take an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)," he said in an interview. "And it's hard because they don't really have someone to model themselves after. Or they don't know, with that STEM education, where it's going to take them. So for me to tell a kid to take an interest in computer science and I'm nowhere in that field—that's a tall order."

"This is the beginning for me and more importantly there's purpose behind it," he said, adding that he'll be able to tell kids that "this venture is proof that you too—we come from the same place—you just have to have vision and surround yourself with amazing skilled people to be able to do this type of work."
