Google self-driving cars to hit roads in June
Google's self-driving car is set to move from test tracks to city streets this summer. Even with its being autonomous, the vehicle prototypes will include a removable steering wheel and accelerator and brake pedals—in case of emergency. With nearly a million autonomous on-road miles logged since starting the project, the fleet has recently been self-driving about 10,000 miles a week and they have the equivalent of about 75 years of typical American adult driving experience.
New road-ready vehicles come with the same software that powers self-driving Lexus Rx450h SUVs, with a neighborhood-friendly 25 mph speed.
"Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people, Whether by reducing the 94 percent of accidents caused by human error, reclaiming the billions of hours wasted in traffic, or bringing everyday destinations and new opportunities within reach of those who might otherwise be excluded by their inability to drive a car," Urmson said.
There is no official word on when the company's autonomous car will be available for sales to the masses.
