Facebook acquires Whatsapp Messenger
Facebook in February announced plans to acquire mobile messaging service WhatsApp.
The social network on Monday confirmed the closing of the deal by publishing a document filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
The acquisition is extimated to cost a total of $22 billion. According to the paperwork, WhatsApp will remain a wholly owned subsidiary of Facebook, while WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will serve on Facebook's Board of Directors.
"WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people," Zuckerberg said early this year, two months before the app topped 500 million global users. "The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable."
WhatsApp users, meanwhile, have not noticed any difference in the service, which will continue operating as it always has, completely ads-free. Facebook messenger will not be affected by this new deal.
WhatsApp is available for download on Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Nokia S40, Symbian, and Windows Phone; free for the first year, the app costs $0.99 yearly after first year of use.
